Are There Headache Cures?

It's really hard to say that there are cures for every type of headache. For a simple tension headache, certainly an aspirin or acetaminophen can prove be very effective at relieving your pain. Of course this does not imply that you will never have another headache, so in that sense, it probably cannot be considered a cure, merely a form of relief. People get headaches for a wide variety of reasons: tension, sinus problems, colds, flu, eye problems, or annoying, stressful situations can all instigate a headache. Severe head injuries may also result in a headache. When I was five or six, I fell and struck my head on a metal chair, which produced an enormous goose egg. In those days doctors would advise parents not let a child fall asleep after a bump on the head. I didn't envy my mother that task because I was, and still am, a sleepyhead. Going to sleep immediately was all I could think of. After a number of other minor head injuries throughout my childhood, I'm still here, so they must have had something right. Of course my dad attributed it to the fact that I am hard-headed, and this is one thing on which my family and friends would tend to agree.

For people who suffer from migraine headaches, it's a matter of managing the pain and the nausea which may accompany it. I'm sure people try all kinds of remedies, but over the counter medicine, prescription medicine, and avoiding stress and reactive triggers may be the best measures. Migraine headaches can be triggered by foods such as chocolate, caffeine, MSG, cheese, or red wine. Red wine has done it more than once for me. Some people find that exposure to strong odors will bring on an attack. Even abrupt changes in the weather, stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, or changes in one's normal schedule may all contribute to migraines. Doctors are not entirely sure what brings them on, but physically they are thought to be caused by changes to the blood vessels in your head. Some people have found the herb Feverfew to be useful in preventing or lessening the pain of migraines. Feverfew has relatively few side effects, but make sure to check with a doctor before trying herbal preparations.

For the occasional non-migraine headache, rest and pain relief medications will have you feeling better in no time. But if you suffer from migraines more than just occasionally, discuss with your doctor lifestyle changes and medications which might help you to manage the pain. They may not be headache cures, but they will make living with migraines easier. I read that 75% of migraine sufferers are women and some of them finally experience migraine relief after menopause. I guess that could be one benefit of getting older.
