Medication For Headaches

Many people can get relief from their headaches with over the counter headache medications. Aspirin is probably the most common of these although it should never be used for young children because of the dangers of Reyes Syndrome. I have known many people who swore by B.C. or Goody's headache powder in spite of the fact that they also contain aspirin. My grandfather was convinced that nothing but B.C. would work. This is a situation where it is all about what you are used to taking. I always liked Excedrin, probably because it has some caffeine in it. Aspirin may result in stomach upsets in certain people, in which case you can purchase it in a coated form or take it with food.

Acetaminophen or Tylenol is another popular headache remedy. It causes less stomach upsets and it ideal for people who are already taking certain medications or who might have bleeding disorders. Tylenol comes in tablets, capsules and liquid form, which is appropriate for children. There are generic forms of this over the counter drug which are generally much less expensive. Make sure to check the strength so that you are getting the same dose. Most drug stores and big box stores carry their own brands. Ibuprofen another effective over the counter remedy. It is important to remember that if you take any pain medication for three or more days a week, you might experience rebound headaches. If you suspect that this might be the case, make sure that you consult with your doctor.

Migraine headaches sometimes respond to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Aleve. The generic name is naproxen and it is equally effective and less expensive. When migraines are severe or very frequent, prescription medications are often required. Dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, ergotomine with caffeine, isometheptene, and a variety of triptans may be prescribed should that be the case. Sometimes medications for nausea and vomiting are suggested for migraine symptoms as well. If you suffer from frequent migraines your doctor may prescribe medication to prevent them. Be sure to take them exactly as prescribed for the best results.

When you have a headache, take time to relax and rest with your head supported and after you take your medication. A quiet darkened room perform wonders. Sometimes a warm compress helps along with some topical advertised preparations. In addition there are some herbal remedies. Using a compress filled with lavender may help considerably when placed over the eyes. If over the counter headache medications and lifestyle changes are not helping you, consult with your doctor about a prescription product.
