Migraines--Home Remedies

Under some circumstances migraine sufferers may wish to turn to home remedies to treat their migraines. When you consider that migraine headaches are extremely painful and may last up to 72 hours, you can imagine that any amount of relief would be extremely welcome. There are several kinds of home remedies that are are safe to use in conjunction with other medications.

Many people report that ice wraps or towels can provide almost immediate relief when applied to the head or neck. Ice wraps can be purchased very inexpensively at drug stores and stored in your freezer. Lacking this, you could simply use a wet towel. After wettinf, wring it out thoroughly and place in the freezer until it is very cold. This seems to be most effective when placed around the neck, but you can also try wrapping it around your head.

If you can get someone to give you a relaxing head massage in a darkened room, this is another means of reducing the pain.Even If you are alone, you can try massaging yourself. I know this works for me. My husband also has a wonderful touch and if I am able to convince him I actually have a headache, he does a great job. I think the key with massage is that it relaxes you and relieves the throbbing pain.

Some people report relief from eating salty foods like chips,or from drinking large quantities of water or juices containing vitamin C or small amounts of caffeine. Just remember, however, that if you are prone to caffein- induced migraines, this may not be the apprpriate remedy for you. This, in fact, may make them worse, so use cautio. When I I do get a headache, I eliminate my caffeine intake and in that case, a little caffeine jolt works like a charm for me.

Possibly the most obvious home remedy is instituting lifestyle changes. Make determined efforts to get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet, and implement some exercise. Many people report a vast improvement in migraines as soon as they are on a regular exercise routine. This doesn't mean having to run a marathon--just twenty minutes of walking a day is signiricant. It has been established that we also minimize the importance of rest. My husband is a big believer in a short daily nap and he rarely has headaches. I, on the other hand, was brought up in a home where taking a nap during the day was inconceivable unless you happend to be sick. Since I retired from a full-time job, I have come to believe he is right about napping. I take one occassionally and I make an effort to stop as soon as I am tired. While it is hard to admit he's right, I do feel much better and rarely have headaches any more.

Regareless whether you have frequent migraines or just an occasional one, check with your health professional to see if he or she recommends implementing some of these home remedies for migraine in addtion to your prescribed regimen. You may find that they provide some measure of relief.
