I took 4 ibuprofen and 2 excedrin migraine pills within 8 hours today. Should I be worried?

January 16th, 2012

I had a horrible migraine and the first 4 ibuprofen (taken over a span of 6 hours) was unhelpful. I’m starting to feel a little sick to my stomach now, though

Honestly, I think you are probably going to be ok. It also depends on how old you are and the size of your body. An adult recommended dose of excedrin migraine pills is 2 every 6 hours. 4 ibuprofen is 800 mg of ibuprofen which is one prescription dose of ibuprofen. If you have a lot of pain killer inside of you, especially ibuprofen, it is hard on the stomach which might by why hour stomach hurts now. I would recommend eating some food to go with it and lie down. If your symptoms start getting worse than you might want to get it checked out, but I honestly think you should be fine…

What are some very effective at home remedies for a massive throbbing headache?

January 9th, 2012

My mom is having a severe headache and she can’t lay down because it hurts even more. She already took Tylenol but it isn’t working. Anything helps. Thank you.

Place some ice, cubed or crushed, in a freezer bag and wrap it in a towel. Have your mom sit in an easy chair with the ice placed at the back of her head from the base of the skull to the top of the shoulders. Dim the lights and have her close her eyes. Good Luck.

I need migraine treatment help?

January 3rd, 2012

Ive tried about every migraine preventive and treatment medication there is. Doc asks me what to do. What do I try now?

I used to have the same problem as you too. There are a lot of things you can do to prevent or lessen your migraine.

First, are you seeing a neurologist with regards to your migraine? Did a neurologist diagnose you with one? You might want to consider getting a neurologist especially one that specialises in headaches and pain management. Obviously your current doctor have run out of options and it might be better to have a second opinion.

Anyway, you could start first by a headache diary. It might help you spot a trigger, which will in turn lessen you migraine attacks if you avoid them. This is the best way to minimise your migraine attack.

Whenever you have a migraine, write down the day, date, time, what you have eaten for that day, how long the migraine has lapsed, the pain score (from 1-10, 1 being the least), emotional factor (what was mood, were you feeling depressed, angry or stressed?), what medication have you taken to lessen the pain, and the pain score after the medication.

From there, you might be able to spot patterns like certain food triggers your migraine, or certain days eg mondays because you are in a rush so you didn’t eat breakfast thus lack of food therefore migraine.

What about time? Are you in a very hot or cold place at a particular time? That could trigger migraines. Fluctuating weather and temperature could also trigger migraine. A change in season too. Some people can predict weather by their offset in migraines.

What about stress? Some people get migraine when they are extremely stressful, especially during examination periods, year end job review and so on… That could easily set off a migraine attack…

What about menstrual migraine? some people get migraine before their menses…

Why not you try keeping a headache diary for a month. Then try to spot patterns. From there, see if you can make changes in your lifestyle and hopefully reduce migraine in your life.

Next, are you on a lot of pain medications? By a lot, are you taking them more than 3 times a week? Rebound headache (headache from medication overuse) is the most common headache seen after migraine.

If you are stop. You will realise that your head hurt a lot. After that, your migraine will hurt less.

After all these, if you are considering preventatives, you can try preventative medications like topamax or beta blockers like proprananolol or tricyclic like amitriptyline, these are the more common drugs use to prevent migraines.

Studies have shown that acupuncture works in decreasing the frequency and severity of migraine as well.

There are some off label use of botox which worked for some (botox could last about 3-6 months depends on a personal basis).

As for off label use of alternative medication, some studies showed that taking Coenzyeme Q10, Riboflavin and magnesium have an effect of reducing the frequency of migraine.

Pain medication that are available include over the counter medications like paracetamol, aspirin or presciption medication like ultracet, oxcodone, vicodin as well as temporary relief nerve blocks for people who have a migraine attack (where preventatives are quite useless). There are also medications like Sumatriptan or its derivatives that targets the the treatment of migarine.

Lastly, before a migraine start, you would have a prodrome. Do you have a particular food craving or mood swings? Yawning, fatigue, excessive sleeping are also some symptoms. Some people have diarrhea or constipation as well…

During a prodrome, try taking metoclopramide, it might reduces the migraine or even prevent it.

Talk to your neurologist (if you have one if not find one!) and discuss your options with him/her. S/he will be able to help you go through all your options base on your medical history.

Is it okay to take Migraine Medication for Headache?

December 26th, 2011

I get really bad headaches sometimes but I’m not sure they are exactly Migraines. So my question is is it safe to take medication geared towards Migraines like Excedrin Migraine. I have tried regular Excedrin and others but i need something strong to take the pain away.

Medication especially for migraines (prescription) will not work on ordinary headaches. If yours are sever, see your Dr.

migraine drug free treatment?

December 12th, 2011

Hi
About to embark on my 4th IVF cycle and was wondering if anyone has any luck with migraine treatments that are drug free. I suffer greatly with migraines lasting about 3 days unless I take a zomig. I am dreading it already. Of course have tried the cold press on the neck, back etc. Someone recently told me about eating Kiwi’s when one started and it helped a little but I would love to hear from anyone who has any experience of this and has found a food/drink/treatment that has worked for him or her.

Migraine medication without weight gain?

November 29th, 2011

Does anyone know of a migraine medication that has no weight gain besides topamax? I’ve been on topamax for 8 years and have the side effects of kidney stones which I get constantly, constant hair loss and memory loss.

There are medications which have side effects like the ones you mentioned. Migraine is characterized by acute pain in the head. It is this reason why heavy medicines are prescribed to the patients. For proper medication with minimal side effects, visit the doctor within time.

if i take excedrin migraine for a headache what will happen?

November 29th, 2011

because i have no advil in my household.

Excedrin Migraine hasn’t ever really worked well for me. By the way, it has the same exact ingredients in it as regular Excedrin, so if you want to save money you can just buy regular Excedrin (or a generic version of regular Excedrin). Check the labels and you’ll see that I’m right.

You should try to get your hands on some Midrin. It is the cure-all for anything headache-related for me. In most states it isn’t a fully controlled substance so you can actually get it from one of those new drugstore clinics(like Walgreens take care, CVS minute clinic). Or you can wait and see your regular doctor and ask for some tomorrow. You can also order it online. It’s basically a combination pill with tylenol, a muscle relaxant, and vein adjustor to take away the pain and calm you down.

I have a knot on the back of my and it causes headaches what should I do?

November 27th, 2011

I have had this knot on my head since I was a teenager, but now it causes problems

I have something similiar to this, and when I get headaches I often associate it with the knot but in truth it probably has little to do with it.I would recommend getting it checked just to be safe but you’re headaches may be brought on by stress or many other factors. You may want to try excedrin or just motrin,if you’re pain is more severe you’re doctor can prescribe something stronger.Good luck to you!
